Description of Formula

Urinary Support promotes a healthy urinary system. This formula optimizes circulation and accordingly promotes normal tone within the urinary tract. Additionally, it restores and enhances immune system function, particularly within the kidneys and urinary tract. Both the traditional use of these plants and modern day scientific inquiry provide the basis for this formulation.*

Uva Ursi leaf comes from a North American shrub long respected by many Native American tribes. Uva Ursi supports health and optimal immune protection in the tissues of the urinary tract and kidneys. The constituent arbutin is associated with maintaining health and proper immune protection in the urinary tract, but must have an alkaline environment to be effective. Hence, it is advisable to avoid acidic foods, including acidic fruits and juices, while taking this herb, to ensure maximum efficacy.*

Pipsissewa herb is native to the eastern coast of North America and a traditional urinary tract tonic. Like Uva Ursi, Pipsissewa contains arbutin. Pipsissewa helps to maintain urinary tract and prostate gland health, and promotes fluid balance.

Echinacea enhances normal immune function, particularly by ensuring healthy non-specific immune function. For example, Echinacea supports the function of white blood cells that swallow up, obliterate and then clean up unwelcome organisms. Its effects extend to the urinary tract, providing immune protection for healthy kidney and urinary tract tissue.*

Chinese Coptis rhizome is one of several plants containing immune supportive alkaloids. The most researched of these alkaloids is berberine; Coptis contains others including coptisine. These alkaloids have been shown to support the body's natural non-specific immune response. It is also shown to increase blood flow to the spleen, resulting in a second mechanism that enhances the body's non-specific immune response. Additionally, this herb supports kidney function by promoting the healthy excretion of urine. *

Usnea lichen, otherwise known as Old Man's Beard, contains a variety of lichen acids and other constituents that work synergistically to promote mucous membrane health and digestive health. Specific lichen acids, such as usnic acid, have a bitter quality that may function to protect the body from undesirable organisms. *

Safety Evaluation/Contraindications
Do not take during pregnancy or lactation. The urine may harmlessly turn brown while taking this formula. This formula may cause cramping, constipation, nausea and vomiting if taken in large doses, over an extended period. Foods that acidify the urine may interfere with efficacy of the formula. Do not take Urinary Support if you have liver disease, any kidney disorder, renal failure, gastrointestinal irritation, diabetes, infertility, or peptic ulcer disease. Use with caution if you have a systemic illness such as multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, AIDS, HIV infection, or any other autoimmune diseases. Do not use if you are allergic to the Astercaceae/Compositae (includes daisies, marigolds, ragweeds and others) family. If you experience fast or irregular breathing, itching, skin rash or hives, seek medical attention promptly. Use with caution if you have cystitis. Do not use this formula long-term (more than 3 consecutive weeks). *

Known Drug Interactions
Drugs that acidify the urine may interfere with the efficacy of the formula. Do not administer simultaneously with tetracycline, codeine, atropine, and/or Cardec DM® (doses of each should be separated by at least one hour). This formula should be used with caution in combination with diuretics such as Triamterene, Thiazide diuretics, Spironolactone, and Loop diuretics. Additionally, this formula may interact with immunosuppressive medications, and acid-inhibiting drugs, such as antacids, sucralfate (Carafate®), H-2 antagonists, or proton pump inhibitors. Some of the herbs in this formula have not been studied extensively to determine their interactions with other medications. Before using this formula, talk with your healthcare professional if you take any medications.*
