HISTORY
Turmeric is one of the most widely used herbs in the east and has been used extensively in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. MECHANISM OF ACTION
Although Turmeric is known for its beautiful and ornate floral presentation most medical curiosities focus on the under-ground parts called rhizomes. Within these dense fibrous root structures are a treasure chest of nutritional compounds. The most studied belong to a group of compounds called curcuminoids. In particular, modern science has focused its efforts on a compound called curcumin.
Curcumin is a yellow pigment found in the rhizomes that are responsible for its bright color. In the National Library of Medicine, there are over 160 studies dedicated to this compound and interest does not seem to be waning. In fact, at the time of this writing, the United States National Institutes of Health are conducting 4 clinical trials using Turmeric for pancreatic cancer, multiple myeloma, Alzheimer's, and colorectal cancer.
