Numerous botanicals are used to support the healthy growth and strength of skin, nails and connective tissue. In part, the explanation for these effects has been that the plants contain minerals essential for tissue healing, such as silica. Skin health is also intimately tied with health in other systems, especially digestive, urinary, cardiovascular, lymphatic and liver. Supporting these systems indirectly encourages healthy skin. While tradition is rich with recorded uses of plants for skin health, several of these herbs have yet to be studied in modern clinical trials. As such, this formula is based primarily on traditional uses of the following plants.*
Horsetail herb and Ash from the roasted plant contains silica in significant quantities, a nutrient important for healthy skin and nails. Horsetail is regarded as a useful tonic for connective tissue and has a mild supportive effect to the urinary system.*
Nettle leaf and its Ash are phytonutrient and mineral dense. Nettle was used traditionally to support healthy hair and skin. It is also used for supporting healthy joints, and as a mild tonic to the urinary system.*
Alfalfa leaf contains phytoestrogens and is also nutrient dense. It provides hormonal and nutritional support for the skin. Alfalfa appreciates wide use as a skin and hair tonic.*
Gotu Kola leaf & Root have long been used to support the health of skin, hair, and nails in Asia. Numerous clinical trials have shown that Gotu Kola indeed has numerous beneficial dermatologic effects. These supporting actions include increased integrity of skin tissue, connective tissue maintenance, increased formation of connective tissue structural components, and increased keratization of the skin. Additionally, Gotu Kola supports capillary strength and circulation. Finally, Gota Kola is shown to be supportive for the liver.*
Triphala extract is an Ayurvedic remedy combining the fruits of three antioxidant and soothing herbs: Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellerica, and Phyllanthus emblica. Triphala is used as a digestive tonic and to support the skin in Ayurvedic medicine.*
Yellow Dock root (Rumex crispus) has a long history of maintaining skin health. It supports skin and nails by optimizing digestion. It also supports lymphatic and liver function. This helps by reducing the toxins processed out through the skin.*
Burdock root is a popular food in Japan, known as Gobo. It has similar properties and uses to Yellow Dock. It has also been used topically for maintaining hair health.*
Figwort herb is an alterative and astringent herb historically used to soothe and support the health of skin and mucosal membranes.*
Astaxanthan is an antioxidant carotenoid. This ingredient also enjoys some scientific research. It appears to help protect the skin and have other supportive benefits. It may also maintain normal growth patterns of skin cells and regulate the immune system.*
Oregon Grape root is considered a useful tonic for the entire digestive tract, and has indirect benefits for maintaining healthy skin. Topically, it shows promise in double-blind trials for supporting skin health. This is probably related to its soothing and immuno-modulating benefits.*
