Description of Formula
THE LIVER'S IMPORTANT ROLE
The liver is the most important organ for carrying out detoxification and metabolic functions. This means it helps eliminate toxins (either from the environment or made by the body) and transforms food into all the nutrients needed by the body. When the liver is disrupted, its various functions become more and more compromised. The immune system can become hyperactive. Unfortunately, the result is that the immune system can begin to damage healthy tissue throughout the body. A large portion of this damage is due to generation of free radicals by immune cells. Chinese Bupleurum root has primarily been researched as part of a traditional Chinese formula known as sho-saiko-to (which contains about 20% Bupleurum). Sho-saiko-to fosters normal liver function. Chinese Bupleurum appears to protect the liver, calm the immune system, and possibly directly support protein synthesis in the liver. This plant is highly regarded in traditional Chinese herbal medicine where it is considered helpful in a variety of circumstances, including as a support for the liver.*
Licorice has been used in traditional Western herbalism as well as Traditional Chinese herbalism. In Traditional Chinese herbalism, licorice was widely used to support the liver, digestive, and respiratory systems and to make other herbs work together in a formula. Licorice root is one of the most widely researched herbs. In particular, it appears to support normal liver function. Licorice root blocks the breakdown of the body's own cortisol, thus making the cortisol available for longer. This results in an indirect soothing throughout the body. The presence of higher amounts of natural cortisol would also tend to normalize immune reactions. Studies suggest that the benefit of licorice is mediated by its effects on the immune system.*
Reishi mushroom helps regulate the immune system, eliminate free radicals, and protect normal liver function. Numerous studies have supported its uses in traditional Chinese medicine.*
Maitake mushroom is one of many mushrooms used in traditional Asian and European herbal systems that, like Reishi, helps maintain normal immune function.*
