Corydalis tubers were held in high regard by the Physiomedicalists and the Eclectic physicians of the last century. It is said that "all the excretive avenues of the body are more or less emptied of injurious and impure contents" and that "its efficacy is not equaled by any other agent as an alterative tonic". It is also of value in this formula for its ability to improve digestion.*
Black Alder bark has a long history of use as an alterative. Dr. John Scudder, the medical doctor who created this formula, said that the Black alder is simply the ideal alterative - due to the fact that "it exerts a specific influence upon the processes of waste and nutrition, increasing one and stimulating the other". It is reported to have particular effect on indigestion, and in supporting lymphatic function. Dr. Scudder also noted its use of promoting skin and mucous membrane health.*
Mayapple root is another example of a highly respected alterative. Dr. Scudder discovered that if Mayapple is extracted in hot water, the alterative compounds within the plant are extracted and the laxative compounds in the plant are left behind. The hot water extracted Mayapple is used here. Its reported affinity for improving digestion, along with its use in supporting liver function make it of particular benefit in this formula.*
Figwort joins this formula of noted alteratives. It has been described as a "mild and gently stimulating alterative". It is particularly respected for its influence with maintaining health of the skin.*
Yellow Dock root is considered a tonic alterative with mild laxative action. It is interesting that both Native Americans and the Eclectic physicians of the last century used the Yellow Dock for its mild laxative quality and for maintaining health of the skin. The Eclectic physicians noted that it was particularly useful where lymphatic support was necessary. Importantly, the Yellow Dock is also noted to improve digestion and liver function, making it particularly useful here.*
